If you’ve followed my Blackhawks writing for a number of years, you’ll know how much I love random oddities in sports or team history. Well, as we near the end of August we’re at the time of year when random stuff starts to become fun. So here we go…
Random fun fact: three current Blackhawks will be the only players in franchise history to wear their respective numbers. No player had previously worn 89 (Andreas Athanasiou) or 98 (Connor Bedard). Newcomer TJ Brodie will be the first Blackhawks player to wear No. 78.
In total, there were 16 jersey numbers that had only been worn by one member of the Blackhawks. Ilya Mikheyev will become only the second Blackhawks player to wear No. 95 this year, joining franchise legend Dylan Sikura. And Lukas Reichel is changing to No. 73, joining Blackhawks legend Brandon Pirri as the only players in franchise history to wear that number.
So we’ll take that down to 14 to only have one player wear it. And two of those — 81 (Marian Hossa) and 88 (Patrick Kane) — will never be worn again. We’ll see if 98 is a one-and-done hopefully well down the line in the future…
The most popular number in franchise history is 6, which has been worn by 49 players. Jake McCabe wore it most recently.
