The Blackhawks had prospects on the ice on Wednesday morning as they prepare for the upcoming Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase this weekend in St. Louis. A few roster changes of note right off the jump: Artyom Levshunov is hurt and won’t play. The same is true for forward Alex Pharand, who apparently got hurt in the preseason game with Sudbury on Sunday and won’t be able to participate. Defenseman DJ King was at the skate on Wednesday, so it appears he’ll be joining the squad.
We spoke with IceHogs head coach Anders Sorensen and three prospects after practice on Wednesday: Ethan Del Mastro, AJ Spellacy and Frank Nazar. Each player is coming into this prospect camp in a very different place in their development.
- Spellacy said he got a call from (surprise!) Nick Foligno after he got drafted. I really want to know how he got all of these guys’ phone numbers so fast this offseason. He might be the best recruiter this side of Nick Saban. He wants to earn his first pro contract this season and expects to be a leader in Windsor.
- Del Mastro said his taste of the NHL gave him some things to think about and work on this summer. He looks forward to earning a spot on the NHL roster at some point.
- Nazar didn’t want to say too much about personal goals or the veterans who were added to the roster, but did say he has high standards for himself and wants to win the second-line center spot on the NHL roster.
- Nazar also said he loved playing against Levshunov last year. Michigan vs. Michigan State is a great rivalry so there was some giddyup on both sides when they played. It was also fun hearing Nazar talk about comparing notes with his former Michigan teammates as a bunch of former Wolverines turn pro this summer.
- Connor Bedard was in Vegas for the North American players media tour this week. He spoke with Matt Larkin at Daily Faceoff about being a full year removed from the hype and media frenzy that followed him for what felt like half of his life leading up to his draft and then thru his rookie season. It has honestly probably been at least two years since Bedard had a “normal” summer of training; the 2022 World Juniors got bumped to the summer because of a COVID outbreak and last year he got drafted. So if he’s a somewhat rested, confident, healthy, stronger/faster player coming into his sophomore season?
- Here’s something Bedard told Larkin that caught my attention. This sounds like a mature guy in his late-20s talking about changes on the roster around him, not a… 19-year-old.
“There’s guys who leave that you’re close with, but you see guys come in, and we had a big free agency and that was really exciting for us,” he said. “We feel going into this year that we have a lot to prove. It is disappointing last year with how things went. We’re competitive guys, we really didn’t enjoy that at all, so we feel like these [new] guys are going to come in and help us, and we got a lot of great players, so we’re excited.”
- Meanwhile, on the ice in Vegas…
- While we’re on the subject of the Oilers, one has to wonder “how the heck are they going to get under the salary cap to start the season?” Well, our old friend LTIR called and owes Edmonton a favor apparently. Even with Evander Kane’s $5.125M cap hit likely going on the shelf for a while to start the season, the Oilers will still need to figure out how to make their money work at the end of the season assuming he comes back at any point during the regular season. Nurse sounds like he’ll be good to go or close to it by the start of the regular season.
- A reminder: Blackhawks prospect Ryan Greene will co-captain the Boston University Terriers across the Atlantic Ocean this season as BU, Notre Dame, Merrimack and Harvard play in Belfast this coming season. I am formally requesting the higher ups here pay for me to fly over and cover these games. Think I’ve got a chance?
- Finally, the Bears are playing in prime time on Sunday night and they’ll be wearing…
