The Blackhawks’ prospects play again tonight! Ben Gaudreau will get the start in net after Drew Commesso got the nod last night against the Blues. I’ll note right away that Nolan Allan was the captain last night with Landon Slaggert and Ethan Del Mastro wearing A’s for the Hawks. Unfortunately, the Blackhawks gave up their lead three times and lost 4-3 in overtime. But it was a fun game with a lot we could take away. I broke it down and shared all of the highlights last night.
Reminder: the Blackhawks play the Wild’s prospect tonight at 6 PM CT. The game will stream once again on the Blackhawks’ website and app.
- Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson spoke during the second intermission and was asked about AJ Spellacy, who scored Chicago’s second goal of the night. He was flying all over the ice and played with an edge as well. Davidson liked what he saw, and went back to Spellacy being fairly young in his hockey path; he only committed to hockey full time a couple years ago.
- How about some Slaggert content for your Saturday morning?
- If you missed seeing Anders Sorensen behind the bench, he apparently needed to deal with a family matter so Rob Klinkhammer is running the ship for the games this weekend.
- On the Friday edition of the “32 Thoughts” podcast, Elliotte Friedman threw a little info at us regarding what he’s hearing about the timeline for Artyom Levshunov‘s injury. He said it’s two weeks in a walking boot and then TBD, with a max of six weeks out of the lineup.
- For what it’s worth, when asked about the timeline on Thursday after practice, IceHogs head coach Anders Sorensen said “soon.” He didn’t seem worried. We’ll talk to Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson on Thursday of the coming week to open training camp.
- This is potentially enormous news for the hockey landscape as we know it. I’ve mentioned previously that there’s a class action lawsuit pending that would open the door for CHL players to play college hockey — something that isn’t allowed right now. Would a player like Spellacy consider the collegiate route if that was an option for him? Remember: he was being recruited to play college football before he committed to hockey full time. If this door does open, there could be a surprising number of players who opt for the college route. I’ll be keeping an eye on this moving forward for sure.
- Luke Hughes, who finished third in Calder Trophy voting behind Connor Bedard and Brock Faber, is going to miss the start of the regular season because of a shoulder injury.
- Finally, the Cubs called up an outfielder we’ve heard about for a few years now. Great, right? Not really.
