The first (preseason) game of the new year is finally upon us, Blackhawks fans! Our long summer is over and there will be skaters on the ice at the United Center this evening. We’ll get a look at a number of the newly added veterans in the lineup, especially on the blue line. And some young players will look to continue impressing the coaches and front office as they make their case for either an NHL roster spot or a first pro contract.
Get your best “Detroit Sucks” chants ready because the Red Wings are in town. And they’re actually sending a pretty decent group for the game tonight (but no Patrick Kane). Finally, figure out which screen you can best stream this one on, because we don’t have a television option. Not yet…

Injury Report
Chicago Blackhawks
- Artyom Levshunov (foot) and Laurent Brossoit (knee) are out.
Detroit Red Wings
- The Red Wings have already assigned or released 11 players from camp. This is their first preseason game.
What to Watch For
- I’m excited to watch Nazar skate with a veteran like Hall. He has a chance to win an NHL roster spot and has had a good, confident camp. Game action will matter in his evaluation and this is his first test.
- I am equally excited — and intrigued — by the new-look Blackhawks blue line. Korchinski will get some run with five established veterans, and will have some familiarity with Murphy. Splitting up Jones and Vlasic is something to keep an eye on as well. Head coach Luke Richardson likes Brodie playing his off-side with Vlasic and Martinez being a calm, steady, stay-home defenseman with Jones. We’ll see how it plays out.
- Finally, the prospect who has received the most buzz in camp has been Spellacy. He’ll center a line with two veterans tonight. He can fly and has an NHL body already. Let’s see how he performs in against NHL players (and prospects) tonight at the United Center for the first time.
