We’ve talked a lot in this space about how the Blackhawks’ front office under Kyle Davidson has been collecting some specific attributes in their prospects. Speed and skill have been at the top of the list, especially up front. Another element has been leadership.
There will be seven players in either Chicago or Rockford this season who were a captain somewhere before they turned pro. Two Blackhawks prospects will wear a C for a ranked college team to start the season. And, on Friday, two more Blackhawks prospects joined a list of prospects who wore an A for their respective teams before turning pro.

Pre-Blackhawks Captains
So many of the Blackhawks’ prospects have worn a letter at some point in their hockey careers, whether it’s in junior or college. Connor Bedard, Landon Slaggert, Nolan Allan, Ethan Del Mastro, Colton Dach, Paul Ludwinski and Cole Guttman have all been captains in college or junior before turning pro.
That will be the case again this season with Blackhawks prospects Ryan Greene being a co-captain at Boston University and Dominic James being the captain at Minnesota-Duluth. On Friday, two more Blackhawks prospects were presented with a letter by their respective teams.
Pre-Blackhawks Alternates
The Blackhawks have also had their share of assistant and alternate captains. Slaggert wore an A for USA Hockey and Del Mastro wore one for Canada at their respective World Juniors. Alex Vlasic and Drew Commesso both wore an A for Boston University. Gavin Hayes wore an A for Flint in junior as well.
Blackhawks prospect Aidan Thompson will serve as an alternate captain for the defending national champions at the University of Denver.
On Friday, Subury announced forward Alex Pharand will wear an A this season. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to participate in the prospect showcase practices or Blackhawks training camp practices because of an injury.
