The Blackhawks out-shot the Red Wings 10-6 in the first period. They did almost everything well in the opening 20 minutes. What they didn’t do: finish the period. The Hawks attacked in the closing seconds and a loose puck flew up the ice and eventually found Alex DeBrincat all alone on the back door for an easy goal with 1.5 seconds left in the period.
The Blackhawks’ second line had a great first period (see my takeaways for more) and they continued that in the second. They got the Blackhawks on the board at 8:42 into the second. Unfortunately, Dylan Larkin is ridiculously fast and he was able to give Detroit the lead back four minutes later. Chicago did get a power play late in the period but it was a hot mess that barely got the puck into the zone. Chicago took a one-goal deficit to the third.
Moritz Seider was credited with Detroit’s third goal three minutes into the third period (there’s gotta be a Pat Foley reference there, no?) and the Blackhawks started chasing. They got a second power play and it was a much hot garbage as the first one. And then Chicago took a penalty quickly after their second empty advantage. The desperate scrambling started to make the Blackhawks increasingly vulnerable as the third period progressed. Detroit added an empty net goal.
Star 1: Nick Foligno
Foligno’s line was buzzing from the jump. They had great numbers in the first period (as mentioned above and detailed below) and then got the Blackhawks on the board with Foligno’s fifth goal of the season. The Blackhawks captain was credited with two shots on goal, two hits and won five of nine faceoffs in the first two periods. He was on the ice for 10 of the Blackhawks’ 19 shots on goal in the first two periods as well. Lead by example.

Star 2: Wyatt Kaiser
Kaiser continues to impress. There were times that pretty much every other defenseman on the roster had an “oh ****” moment in this game but I didn’t see him in one of those spots. He was plus-one (before the empty net goal) with three shots on net, two hits and one takeaway. For as pedestrian as Seth Jones (bad night), Connor Murphy (four giveaways) and Alex Vlasic (minus-three) were, his good night stood out even more.
Star 3: Ryan Donato
Donato had a lot of jump in the second period. After 40 minutes he led the Blackhawks with four shots on goal and had won four of five faceoffs. He was also credited with one hit and one takeaway n the first two periods. He was credited with a team-high five shots on net in the game.
Key Takeaways
- In the middle of the first period, Petr Mrázek made this enormous save on an Alex DeBrincat attempt to keep the game scoreless.

- Watching the first period, I thought “hey, Tyler Bertuzzi‘s got a little extra juice tonight. Revenge game?” When I checked the numbers on Natural Stat Trick at the end of the period, my eyes didn’t lie. The second line dominated the puck. The Blackhawks out-chanced the Red Wings 19-12 in the first and this line was on for most of the offensive action.
- During the third period, Donato and Lukas Reichel swapped spots.
- For as atrocious as the Blackhawks’ power play was, the penalty kill was solid.
- Jones was not good tonight.
- Inside the final five minutes of the first period, Connor Bedard and Patrick Kane were on the ice at the same time. Kane stripped Bedard of the puck, circled the wagons and, when Bedard tried to take it back, drew a penalty on his heir apparent. Missing from this clip: as Kane passed Bedard on his way toward the Detroit bench he chirped the Blackhawks’ teenage star.
