If you’re looking for an exceptional long read on our third straight day without a Blackhawks game, I offer up the Chicago Magazine cover story on Connor Bedard. Wayne Drehs did a terrific job on the story (he always does). But he’s right: the fact that they got Bedard to recreate this shot in the Art Institute is fabulous.
If I might get on my soap box for a moment: one of my all-time film beefs is with “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” It hit theaters in 1986 and was a smashing success. It’s considered by most to be an iconic Chicago movie. And, for me, it’s *this close* to being an all-time great Chicago move. Here’s my problem: in 1986, what high school kid is going to walk around the city of Chicago in a Detroit Red Wings jersey and not have a single person on the street curse him out? Even in a Gordie Howe jersey (much respect), if the film wanted to be authentic someone should have told Cameron to “take that piece of 💩 off.” Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.
Yes, Chicago Magazine got Connor Bedard to recreate the infamous Art Institute shot of Cameron from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Come for the awesome photography, stay for the story. I know the writer pretty well. www.chicagomag.com/chicago-maga…

- Andreas Athanasiou was not claimed off waivers. The Blackhawks assigned him to Rockford on Tuesday.
- To make room for Athanasiou on the roster, the IceHogs assigned Jalen Luypen to the Indy Fuel of the ECHL.
- Ben Pope wrote a good piece on Athanasiou — and TJ Brodie — being a couple massive whiffs by Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson. Athanasiou was initially a win for the Blackhawks; he signed a one-year deal for $3 million and appeared to rediscover his offense. Then he got a two-year deal, hurt his groin and missed most of a season and fell out of favor with the coaches. This isn’t the first time this script has played out for Athanasiou in the NHL, unfortunately. And I think many of us were surprised he got a multi-year commitment; many of us were surprised he, like Max Domi, wasn’t traded at the deadline during his one-year deal.
- The only thing I will note regarding the inevitable complaints about Davidson doing either of these deals is that both will be off the books by the time the Blackhawks need to write the most significant contract in the next generation of the franchise’s history. And, for the most part, Davidson has been incredibly frugal when spending on free agents; the only outside free agents he’s given longer than two years have been Tyler Bertuzzi (four) and Teuvo Terรยคvรยคinen (three), and neither of those deals is going to significantly impact the Blackhawks’ ability to make a bold move to get a big piece in free agency or a trade — even as soon as the summer of 2025.
- Athanasiou and the IceHogs are hosting their Hockey Fights Cancer Night on Friday.
- The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting Chicago Sports Network‘s app is maybe, maybe finally ready? The report indicates the app will likely have a similar cost to Marquee’s DTC service, which is $19.99 per month.
- We’re just a few short weeks away from learning the rosters for the 4 Nations Face-Off. It feels like Terรยคvรยคinen is a lock for Finland and most projections have Bedard playing for Canada. Will Alex Vlasic get a shot for the USA? (He should.)
- Speaking of Bedard, yesterday I shared some thoughts on how to get his offense going.
- We had an interesting trade take place on Tuesday between two rival teams. Washington brought back Lars Eller in a deal with Pittsburgh. The cost: a fifth-round pick in 2025 (that originally belonged to the Blackhawks) and a third-round pick in 2027. Is this the first move in a fire sale for the Penguins?
- For those who enjoy trade forensics as much as me: the Blackhawks’ fifth-round pick involved in this deal was traded to Toronto in the McCabe/Lafferty deal and the Leafs subsequently traded the pick to Washington in the deal for Joel Edmundson.
