Welcome to Chicago, Anders Sorensen! On Friday morning, Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson will address the media regarding the surprising dismissal of head coach Luke Richardson on Thursday afternoon. After the Blackhawks practice, interim head coach Anders Sorensen will speak with the media for the first time in this capacity.
Sorensen has been around the Chicago media before. He’s been an active part of the prospect camps and training camps the past couple years, coaching the players sent to the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase before heading to Rockford to lead the IceHogs. He’s got a fun sense of humor and a quick smile. Now, he has the responsibility of making his players smile more frequently on the ice and, as much as he can with the pieces available, shift the course of the NHL team.
Scott Powers wrote the following about Sorensen’s task ahead:
Now, it’s Sorensen’s job to figure out how to get the most out of [Connor] Bedard. Some of what Sorensen learned by working with [Lukas] Reichel and Frank Nazar over the last few years in Rockford might apply. Sorensen has definitely gotten Nazar going the past month. It sounds like Davidson has some ideas about where he thinks Sorensen can help Bedard, but he wants to hear Sorensen’s ideas, too.
- Ben Pope noted this change in performance by the Blackhawks recently:
- I know there are plenty of Blackhawks fans who won’t give the guy the credit he deserves, but I will not on the timeline referenced by Pope that Seth Jones‘ last appearance for the Blackhawks was Nov. 14. Was Jones individually responsible for the 6 percent drop in expected goal rate? Maybe not, but the trickle down impact of losing your top minutes-eating defenseman and power play QB is undeniable.
- A couple interesting notes from Elliotte Freidman’s “32 Thoughts” column on Thursday (which published hours before Richardson was fired):
One executive, watching frustration pour out from Connor Bedard and Steven Stamkos over the past week, said Wednesday he felt their disappointment multiplied knowing the lack of team success would hurt their Team Canada chances.
- I’m filing that one away…
- Friedman also included this when he was discussing the dumpster fire the Nashville Predators have been this season:
New additions means someone on the existing roster gets squeezed and wishes for a new existence. Coach Andrew Brunette hasn’t sat one of his major players, which is one of the few cards he’s still got to play. But that’s not easy. When a major free agent picks you, it’s not easy to make them the scapegoat.
- Huh… so the team with the second-worst record in the league (fewer wins than the Blackhawks for what it’s worth) is getting a pass for not “doing something that’s hard” in benching veterans who are underperforming — something that got Richardson crucified on social media. Noted.
- We learned some more information about the 2025 Winter Classic on Thursday, news that might have gotten more attention if the Blackhawks hadn’t fired Richardson an hour later.
- (Side note: to me, the timing of Richardson’s termination coming out roughly one hour after the Winter Classic media event felt somewhat disingenuous.)
- A reminder: after the Blackhawks host the Blues in the Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve, the Big Ten is hosting four games — three men’s , one women’s — at Wrigley Field. The college games will take place on Jan. 3-4.
- Hey, speaking of college hockey, the Blackhawks have a bunch of their prospects in action this weekend. Before a wild Thursday, I shared the schedule (and stat updates).
- Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov had a hat trick (and an assist) yesterday.
- This is pretty outstanding. The PHWL is officially in NHL25.
