When the Blackhawks sent out media information for practice on Thursday after the loss to the Bruins and then abruptly cancelled it 45 minutes later, it raised the antennas of a few of us on the email chain. But there was another event in Chicago that also had our attention.
Some of the leaders from the NHL who are helping create the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field were at the Cubs’ offices to share some new information with us and answer some questions. What you see above is the league’s rendering of what the scene will be at Wrigley Field on New Year’s Eve.
One big news item from the Winter Classic event was that The Smashing Pumpkins will perform before the game and Chance the Rapper will perform during the first intermission.
The NHL also announced the league will host a Winter Classic Fan Festival across the street from Wrigley Field from 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM on New Year’s Eve. It’s free to all fans, whether you have a ticket or not. It sounds like the league and Turner (TNT — hopefully the game will actually air this time) have a lot of really incredible plans for league partners to activate, fans to engage and the entire Wrigley area to be consumed with hockey.
