With the injuries to Petr Mrázek and Alec Martinez on Saturday night, the Blackhawks needed to add at least one body before traveling to New York for three games this week. On Sunday morning, they added two.
Mrázek was placed on IR with a left groin issue, which is disheartening because he’s dealt with groin issues in his past and appeared to have finally moved past them and become a steady, solid goaltender since coming to the Blackhawks. Hopefully this isn’t a long-term issue.
Drew Commesso was called up from Rockford to back up Arvid Söderblom for the time being. We’ll see if he actually sees any NHL action; it seems he’ll have to with the Blackhawks playing back-to-back days next weekend.
The Blackhawks had six healthy defensemen on the roster with Martinez going to miss some time (no IR yet, but interim head coach Anders Sorensen said he would be out after the loss). But they still recalled Kevin Korchinski to take the place of Martinez, which is interesting. He’s been playing both the left and right sides in Rockford recently. One would have to think Ethan Del Mastro and Isaak Phillips were also options, but with Sorensen wanting to push the tempo of the offense Korchinski gets the call.
