Hey, there’s a game tonight! According to reporting from the Blackhawks’ practice on Wednesday, the only lineup change appears to be Craig Smith tapping back in for Joey Anderson in his usual spot on the fourth line. However, Alec Martinez was with the team for part of practice before leaving. Ben Pope shared that Martinez left practice early and will now be re-evaluated. While that isn’t ideal (he might be headed for IR at this point), it does open up more opportunity for the young defensemen to step up.
- A couple good stories to share on the beginning stages of Anders Sorensen’s tenure as the interim head coach. Mark Lazerus at The Athletic wrote about how the players are responding to a different approach.
- Pope wrote about Sorensen not only trying to create more space for Connor Bedard to get the puck while in motion, but also involving Bedard in the conversation about how to tweak the offense.
- The Blackhawks get the Islanders tonight and again on Sunday afternoon, and might be catching them at an inopportune time. Though Stefen Rosner reports Mat Barzal and Anthony Duclair were not involved in line rushes and Adam Pelech was on an extra defensive pair at the Isles’ morning skate today, the fact that they all appear to be close to returning might make Sunday’s game a potential return date to circle for them.
- There were a few noteworthy games involving Blackhawks prospects last night, but I wanted to take a moment to shout out Alex Pharand for staying on absolute fire for Sudbury. He scored two more power play goals last night, giving him four power play goals in his last two games. Pharand added a third goal at even strength in the third period for his first career hat trick!
- Pharand, a fourth-round pick (No. 99) by the Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL Draft, extended his personal point streak to eight games last night during which he has nine goals and four assists. Oh, and he had a three-point game before his only doughnut in the past ten appearances. Pharand now has 15 goals and 14 assists in 26 games with Sudbury. He had 30 points in 68 games last year and has 29 already this season! Here are his three goals from last night (in order):

- At some point on New Year’s Eve, there will be tree turdy tree left in da turd on December turdy-first. I can say that confidently because the great Pat Foley will be on the radio call of the Winter Classic for the international syndication audience.
- In the final game with Sorensen as their head coach, the Rockford IceHogs scored seven goals in the first two periods. In three games since Mark Eaton replaced him behind the bench, the IceHogs have been outscored 11-1. Yes, one goal in three games….
- Boston University scored three times in the third period to win 4-2 at UMass. Ryan Greene put three shots on net and won 8 of 12 faceoffs in the win.
- Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker and Brantford against Brampton. Lardis had three assists in the game to add to his lovely stat line for the season — he now has 25 goals and 21 assists in 28 games. And take a look at this pass from Vanacker to set up another Brantford goal.
