The Oilers came out fast. That’s what they do. But… then it happened. Seth Jones poked the puck away from Connor McDavid as he attacked the net (yeah, I know!), the action went the other way and Jason Dickinson set up Teuvo Teräväinen and the Blackhawks were on the board first. And then the same line cashed in again late in the period as Nick Foligno took a hard pass off the boards and tapped it past Calvin Pickard to gives the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead.
Ah, but we aren’t allowed to have nice things. So Edmonton cut the lead in half only 22 seconds into the second period. But… but… the Blackhawks continued to skate, pressure the puck and Ryan Donato scored a critical next goal for Chicago to push the lead back to two in the middle of the second. Unfortunately, the Oilers are good and need the win, too. Adam Henrique scored off a redirect at 15:49 into the second and Corey Perry (of all people) tied the game less than two minutes later. So we headed to the third period tied at three.
With offsetting minor penalties after the horn of the second period, the third period started 4-on-4. The Hawks sent out Dickinson, Ilya Mikheyev, Jones and Alex Vlasic to start against Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm. Neither team scored, which I consider a win for Chicago. The Blackhawks had to kill the first power play of the night and they couldn’t accomplish that mission; Zach Hyman posted up on Jones right in front of the net and deposited a rebound to give the Oilers their first lead of the night.
The Blackhawks fought tonight. They showed a lot more mettle in this game than whatever Friday night was. But they just didn’t have enough gas in the tank to tie the game late.
Star 1: Jason Dickinson
I tend to pay attention to little things that happen in a game as much as the macro story. So consider the following: thru two periods, Dickinson had skated 11:26 total — 10:07 directly against Connor McDavid. He had won 5 of 9 faceoffs. The Oiler had a 14-9 shot attempt and 7-5 shots on net advantage. The Blackhawks had a 2-0 goals on the board advantage; Dickinson had the primary assist on the first of which. McDavid had one shot on net and was minus-two. He won 8 of 14 faceoffs in the game and finished the night skating 12:25 directly against McDavid at even strength. We’re adding this one to the Dickinson for Selke file.
Star 2: Teuvo Teräväinen
After scoring twice in the third period in Detroit, Teräväinen scored the first goal tonight to give him ten for the season. He slapped the hard pass off the boards behind the net to Foligno to set up the second goal, giving him a two-point night in the first period.

- Arvid Söderblom only faced nine shots in the first period but he had to make a couple tricky saves. He allowed three goals in the second period during which he faced 15 shots the Oilers had a 29-13 Corsi For advantage. At times it felt like the Blackhawks were inching close to the second period last night.
- After the horn sounded to end the second period, Viktor Arvidsson whacked Söderblom after he controlled a shot as the clock expired. Louis Crevier laid him out for the whack and the folks came together to discuss their tax preparation methods. Arvidsson and Crevier received off-setting minor penalties, the first penalties of the game at that point.
- Gotta be honest: I was a little surprised the Blackhawks were consistently shifting Connor Bedard‘s line against Leon Draisaitl’s line. Draisaitl’s line got the goal for Edmonton right off a won faceoff to start the second period.
- Bedard’s point streak came to an end at 9 games.
