Hiring Former Head Coaches, Offseason Previews, Following Brogdon’s Free Agency, and Other Bullets

Open your history books to Chapter 3… and begin reading.

This week officially marks the launch of Bleacher Nation Bulls – the same style content you’ve come to love from Brett, Luis, and Michael about the Cubs and Bears – but now for the ever-so depressing Bulls! Ah, just kidding, Bulls … you know we’ll always love you … deep down. Like really deep down.

I’m truly excited to start building this site out, and it’s already been a blast interacting with those of you that follow along with us on social media (like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!). We hope you’ll stick around and suffer through the tough times along with us, because the good times are coming. And it’s all the sweeter if you really earn it. Ask a Cubs fan.

Okay … bullets.

  • The Bulls are not only in the hunt to fill roster spots, but the team also has another assistant coaching vacancy to fill. Jim Boylen has already hired along former Brooklyn Nets assistant coach Chris Fleming as his new leading man. However, the departure of long-time Bull Pete Myers means Boylen can make another move. While Myers was very well respected within the franchise, this may not be the worst thing for the new coaching staff as a whole. Boylen has an opportunity to bring in someone that buys his brand of basketball (still not sure if it’s worth the purchase), and that could always help improve the on-court results.
  • Shams Charania of The Athletic recently disclosed that Houston and New Orleans were looking to hire Ty Lue as an assistant coach, but Lue is still focused on a head coaching gig. At some point, Lue, you just have to move on. But this made me think of a broader point: could the Bulls try and hire a former head coach to the staff? With the lead position already gone and stubborn former head coaches like Lue filling the market, it could be tough, but possibly worth it. Boylen is heading toward his first full season of being an NBA head coach, and I think it’s safe to say, having someone that has been there before could be reassuring. It may seem a bit unrealistic, but if Mike Woodson will take an assistant coaching job after 10 years of being a head coach, then surely names like David Joerger and Igor Kokoškov should be in the mix. I’m just saying, thanks to the quick head coaching turnover we tend to see nowadays, it could be possible for Boylen to start looking at some of these experienced names.
  • The nice thing about having the GOAT play for your franchise (other than winning six rings of course) is that when the Bulls aren’t in the playoffs you can just continuously be reminded of his GOAT-ness! Also, Jordan sweeping the Magic that series just basically ruined them.
  • For your daily Bulls-draft fix, you can go listen to the episode of Bulls Talk that Mark Schanowski recorded with ESPN analyst Jordan Cornette. The two go beyond the normal Coby White talk and bring up several names that may be worth becoming familiar with.
  • The Athletic’s Danny Leroux has been putting together offseason previews, and he finally got to the Bulls (our condolences, Danny). The piece maps out a lot of the main storylines to follow over the course of this offseason with some important facts, so make sure you check it out.
  • Potential Bulls free agent point guard target Malcolm Brogdon discussed his upcoming journey through free agency without many details:
  • But I’m pretty sure that quote totally goes onto say: “I would love to go help solve the Bulls point guard problems on a completely reasonable and inexpensive contract.” RIGHT? Pls, somebody send halp. All jokes aside, we covered some potential Bulls free agent point guard targets over the weekend, and Brogdon’s name has come up twice already. I’m confident we haven’t heard the last of it.

  • Lauri Markkanen talks about how he was once a two-guard in this, and, honestly, that makes a lot of sense.
  • Zach LaVine is already in mid-season shape. Go check out some of his recent workout videos!
