With the 7th Pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls Select … And Other Bullets

With the 7th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls select…

A point guard, the best player available, a good fit, the right choice, the best hair in the draft, Coby White from the University of North Carolina.

You have to admit, it was relatively hard not to be pessimistic heading into last night’s draft. Not only are the Bulls, well, the Bulls, but we were receiving so little information on what direction the franchise wanted to turn. Deep down, we all knew a point guard would make the most sense, but at the surface pure confusion and questioning rested.

We heard the Bulls would trade up, we heard the Bulls would trade down.

We head the Bulls would draft Jaxson Hayes, we heard the Bulls would draft Darius Garland.

Well, now we heard loud and clear from the belly of the beast (Adam Silver) that the Bulls have drafted White. Waking up and realizing the Bulls managed to fill a need and get the best player available is surely an odd one, but heck, I don’t mind it.

In honor of, what I would deem, a successful NBA Draft, let’s walk through some draft-themed bullets!

  • While the pre-draft process dragged on, it was always surprising that White’s name didn’t appear on a workout list for the Bulls. He certainly became the favorite at the No. 7 pick, but no matter how much popularity he gained in the Windy City (which might give his hair some problems), the Bulls and White didn’t build any direct ties.
  • Instead, GarPax brought us through a rollercoaster of speculation, specifically one of those wooden rollercoasters where you look at it and think “is this whole thing just finally going to fall apart?” We didn’t even get any leaked information about how the Bulls secretly watched him workout, similar to what the organization did with Darius Garland and Jaxson Hayes. However, according to K.C. Johnson, the Bulls did meet with White and conducting an interview this past Saturday. The plans to actually work him out fell through thanks to his agency, who also represents current Bulls point guard Kris Dunn.

  • In case you missed it, we had a Coby White highlight party last night!
  • If you don’t like White after watching the below video… I’m sorry, but you are a demon and have no soul.
  • The Athletic’s Darnell Mayberry wrote specifically about the impending point guard battle coming to a court near you this offseason. The Bulls will most likely be heading into next season with Dunn on the roster with his trade value being pretty low right now, so throw White and, most likely, still a free agent point guard on top of that and this is going to be an interesting fight to the regular season opener.
  • Never get him a bigger hat! His beautiful, bouncy hair doesn’t deserve to be covered up! (I think that’s the third hair reference in today’s bullets… keep them coming!)
  • The Stepien has put together my favorite scouting reports that’s I’ve seen so far. While you can go check out plenty of players there, I’m obviously recommending to go take a look at White’s. The report gets down to the nitty-gritty, a lot of good stuff.
  • Okay, I’d be doing the Bulls dirty here if I didn’t also bring up the team’s No. 38 overall draft pick. I’m sorry Daniel Gafford, it’s nothing personal. Gafford is a big man out of Arkansas (sound familiar? *cough* Bobby Portis *cough*) who is an absolute athletic anomaly. He is a quick, seven-foot machine who can throw down some ferocious dunks. He’s definitely a bit of a project for the Bulls to work with if they want him to become a reliable back up to Wendell Carter Jr., but his athleticism alone deserves to be on an NBA court.
  • We included some highlight-reel plays and dunks in our quick post yesterday after he was drafted, so make sure to go look all of that over.
  • I’m just going to leave this here…
  • Oh yeah, our lovely BN Bears guys Luis has a Bulls podcast btw. He and his crew broke down the Bulls draft pick last night, so give it a listen.
