Rookie Daniel Gafford Has Been Assigned to the Windy City Bulls (Update: And He’s Back)

Chicago Bulls

Daniel Gafford will soon get a chance to hone his craft with the Chicago Bulls’ G-League affiliate.

Earlier today, the Bulls announced that they’ve sent Gafford to the Windy City Bulls. Presumably, the move has been made to allow the rookie forward to get in some additional (more consistent) work and an expanded minutes load with the team’s developmental affiliate.

And with Gafford going down to the G-League, Chicago is left with Thaddeus Young and Luke Kornet as the team’s primary options off the bench in the frontcourt.

Gafford, 21, was the Bulls’ second-round pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. And while he’s shown flashes of promise throughout the Summer League and at times during the fall, minutes haven’t been available through the Bulls’ first six games of the regular season (Gafford has appeared in just one game and played just two minutes).

So, in theory, sliding Gafford onto the Windy City Bulls’ roster will allow for him to get some more minutes and a legitimate opportunity to develop his game.

UPDATE (Michael): And … he’s back!

Must’ve been a good practice!

I’m kidding, of course. It seems to me that this (one practice thing) was not the plan as of this morning, so something may have changed. You just hope no one is injured. We’ll have more soon.

Update II (Michael): According to Eli, sending down a young player – even just for a single practice – isn’t super bizarre, but considering the circumstances it sure FELT like a bigger deal than it actually might be/appears to be. We’ll just have to wait and hope we learn more.
