Stern’s Legacy, Jazz On Deck, Collison Is Back, Hutch Practicing Fully, and Other Bulls Bullets

HAPPY NEW YEAR! My resolution: Watching the Bulls play better basketball.

You hear that, Bulls? My big new year’s resolution is contingent on how you perform, so if you don’t want me to take an L right away, you can’t.

Anyway, I hope everyone had tons of fun celebrating the turn of the decade!

  • The first bullet of the 2020s is a sad one. Yesterday, Ex-NBA Commissioner David Stern passed away at the age of 77. A pioneer in sports management, Stern oversaw one of the greatest ascents of a professional league in sports history. He helped turn the NBA into a global name and, arguably, the most marketable pro-sport in the world. While it may sound cliche, there is no NBA as we know it today without Stern. That’s a fact.
  • Bulls’ fans may not want to hear from him, but team owner Jerry Reinsdorf built a relationship with Stern over the years thanks to the franchise’s extreme success in the 90s. The Chicago Bulls released the following statement:
  • Stern had his fair share of bumps over his 30-year career at the helm of the NBA, but what matters most is that he left it significantly better than he found it. For more on Stern’s relationship with Reinsdorf, check out NBC Sports Chicago’s article here. Then, if interested in a more detailed backstory about Stern’s legacy, I highly recommend reading over Marc Stein’s piece for the New York Times. Rest in Peace, David Stern.

  • Okay, time to switch gears *shakes off sadness.* The Chicago Bulls will most likely start the new decade just as they ended the last … a mess. After getting blown out by the Milwaukee Bucks (as most teams do) on Monday, the Utah Jazz will take the United Center floor tonight and make for another tough matchup. Thanks to a pitiful bottom to the Eastern Conference though, the Bulls are only 2.0 games back from a playoff spot and currently sit as the 9th-best team. According to Zach LaVine, a playoff birth this season is still the Bulls’ goal. We’ll see how much longer that goal lasts.
  • Darren Collison would rather retire than play in Chicago – or at least that was the joke. Over the offseason, Collison was up high on the rumor list for the Bulls. In need of a veteran guard at the time, Collison, a 10-year-vet, felt like a clear and obvious choice. However, in the midst of all the madness, Collison announced a shocking retirement. Welp, he’s back.
  • Hey, if both the Lakers and Clippers were interested in me, I’d retire just so I could come out of retirement to join them.
  • Chandler Hutchison worked out with the Windy City Bulls yesterday and should be back on the court sometime soon. He’s missed the last 15 games with a shoulder injury. Does he move the needle? Of course not. Does he add some more defense/rebounding? Yes. The Bulls will take what they can get at the wing.
  • The Athletic’s Stephen Noh broke down how Lauri Markkanen is starting to look like his old self. Good read.
  • If the Bulls stand any chance of beating the Jazz tonight, Wendell Carter Jr. has to have a monster game. I wrote about Rudy Gobert briefly in Monday’s weekly preview, and the two-time defensive player of the year might just be able to shut down the Bulls offensive attack by himself.
  • Congrat, LUUUUUUU!!

  • Ah, the good old days.
  • Hey, this season Bulls actually had one of the top-10 most memorable games of the decade … well, if you’re Sam Smith. Zach LaVine’s 13 3-pointers against Charlotte was good enough to land the No. 9 slot on Smith’s list. Agree?
  • Start in Chicago, end in Chicago (not a lot of Bulls stuff though).
