• I’m a sucker for a smile, and we’ve seen a lot of them from the Bulls over the last week or so. The team continues to pump out some great content from inside their in-market bubble, and while I know the social media crew isn’t going to post anything that doesn’t show a good time, I still choose to believe all the positive vibes oozing from my phone screen are legitimate. The new front office appears heavily involved in the team’s day-to-day activities, which feels like a necessary component to implementing a new culture.
• For many reasons, that’s why I think it’ll end up perfectly fine that new head coach Billy Donovan couldn’t find his way into the bubble. I’m sure his presence would be an added benefit, but the more time Karnisovas and Eversley can spend with uninterrupted with their new players, the better. Without Donovan in attendance, this gives them an opportunity to focus strictly on evaluating each player’s individual talent. If the head coach was in the building, they’d probably have an extra eye on his first impression as well as how the team clicks as a whole under his guidance. Both are important, but this time Karnisovas and Eversley have to solely build a relationship and better understand their players should prove vital for the direction of this franchise.
• Anyway, I encourage you to watch the first two mini-camp videos the team has posted on their website. Whether it be Coby and Wendell playing 2K or the boys running a scrimmage, it’s just nice to see the Bulls in action.
Getting a little better every day…

• The organizational restructure continued in a big way earlier this week when the team announced the hiring of new head athletic trainer Todd Campbell. I don’t blame NBA fans if they don’t know the name of their team’s athletic trainer, mostly because it’s usually a good sign if you don’t. A training staff is basically the equivalent of everything under your car. Each piece is important and they work together to help keep the wheels in motion. Can you operate if a piece is poking out and dangling just above the road? Sure. Typically it’s not a good sign, but it can work (I probably should have picked a better analogy since I know nothing about cars … but here we are). Point being, though, it’s best if we don’t recognize Campbell’s face or hear his name during his Bulls tenure. I’m optimistic that’ll be the case, but it’s kind of annoying that he just spent the last three seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans.
• In case you were unaware, the Pelicans were also one of the most injury-plagued teams over the last handful of teams. The organization had issues with Anthony Davis, and the front office came under fire for using an athletic staff with NFL experience (uh, those two sports don’t exactly coincide when it comes to body-type). Now, fortunately, Campbell wasn’t a part of his fiasco. Before joining the Pelicans in 2017, he worked with the Boston Celtics for 12 years, and he’s more-so considered a member of the team’s revitalized staff. With that being the case, I don’t think this is worth any concern. Plus, as I’ve said numerous times before, it’s hard to put a team’s injury struggles on one guy – even Tanaka. Campbell seems perfectly fine, and he’ll just be another fresh face in the Advocate Center, which is truly what the Bulls need.
• Yesterday Eversley spoke with the media for the first time since his hiring, and he made one thing very clear: IT’S TIME TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP BABY. I’m kidding, but he did say the Bulls aren’t about to rebuild again, and that’s very fun to hear.

• The Heat might as well have been woken up with a hearty backhanded slap to the face last night (the girlfriend did that to me by accident ((I think?)) last week … it was not ideal). I’m not surprised they lost Game 1, but I sure did expect a much more competitive performance. In-game injuries aside, the Heat looked extremely slow on the defensive end, and they had no answer with Anthony Davis. Also, did you think their youth started to show too? The Lakers took complete advantage of Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson when they were on the court. I know this Heat team has shown great fight, but this feels like a sweep waiting to happen right now. Speaking of which, if Anthony Davis gets a ring, does that make it more or less likely he comes home? 0.002% chance increases to 0.006%?
• Makes sense.
After a productive Wednesday of talks with Sixers, Doc Rivers has emerged as a serious candidate in process to hire a new coach, sources tell ESPN. Rivers left town after meeting with ownership and GM Elton Brand. Mike D’Antoni remains other prominent candidate in search.
