Injury Update: Otto Porter Is Out for Friday’s Game, But Will Still Travel to Orlando

Chicago Bulls

After sitting out Wednesday night’s contest against the New York Knicks, Otto Porter will miss his second-straight game due to a back injury, according to head coach Billy Donovan.

The game will be his fifth absence of the season as well as the first time he misses back-to-back contests.

The back issue has been lingering for Porter since he left the team’s January 8th contest against the Los Angeles Lakers, but it hasn’t stopped him from playing six of the nine games the Bulls have had since. Considering these kinds of back issues can linger, I’m not surprised that the team has chosen to take things game-by-game, and it’s still certainly good news that he will travel with the team to Orlando for their two games against the Magic.

With that said, I wonder at one point the team’s medical staff might consider just shutting him down for a brief stint. If Porter’s back continues to flare up after only a couple of games, I think it would be most beneficial to rest him until fully healed. Donovan touched on that idea a bit before last night’s game, and he basically said he will leave any major decisions up to Porter and the medical staff.

“I think everybody responds differently to injuries, but no one from the medical staff has told me, ‘we need to sit him for 10 days, and then he’ll be perfect’ … it’s going to be a collaborative effort between Otto, the media staff, and myself to try to help him.”

In the meantime, Donovan has handed Porter’s minutes mostly to Denzel Valentine, and after last night’s impressive statline (13pts, 6reb, 3ast, 2stl), I would expect that to continue into this weekend.
