When free agency opened up, it was always going to be hard for the Chicago Bulls to re-sign Daniel Theis.
The big man, who came over at the trade deadline from the Celtics, was always rumored to have suitors this offseason, and one of those suitors snatched Theis on Monday night.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Houston Rockets have agreed to terms on a four-year, $36 million deal for the 29-year-old center. Initially looking as if the Rockets signed Theis outright, it appears we could have another sign-and-trade situation on our hands for the Bulls.
Per sources, the Rockets will use the Oladipo trade exception and work a sign-and-trade with the Bulls to get Daniel Theis. https://t.co/PVXE6BqVlM

The Rockets are able to absorb Theis into their books via a trade exception that was created when the team sent Victor Oladipo to the Miami Heat earlier this season. Doing this will allow for them to keep their mid-level exception open for other moves during this free agency period. Meanwhile, the Bulls likely jumped at the opportunity to help Houston with this move, as the organization will now at least get something in return.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks’ it appears this something would be a sizable trade exception that the Bulls could look to use in the pursuit of another player this offseason or later this season.
Between this subtle move and the sign-and-trade maneuvering to immediately land Lonzo Ball, the front office is demonstrating how valuable a savvy front office can be. Don’t get me wrong, AKME still has a couple more moves they need to make, but it has been an impressive start to an absolutely crucial offseason.
