Thanks to Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan’s Instagram accounts, we knew the teammates met for a workout after DeRozan’s unexpected addition to the teams this summer. What we didn’t know is just how much time they had spent together since then.

By the sound of it, DeRozan and LaVine have been borderline inseparable since the big-time sign-and-trade was announced. DeRozan met with the media on Monday, and he chuckled when a reporter asked whether he and LaVine have had time to get to know each other better this summer.
“That’s the beauty of privacy. I was with Zach way before I came to Chicago. We worked out together, I’ve been in and out the last couple of weeks the last month or so. There have been times Zach and I flew here together and flew back to LA together. So we have been spending a lot of time together.”
File that under “Things You Like to Hear.”
While I expected these two to have formed some kind of off-court chemistry thus far, I didn’t expect it to sound this far along. The fact that this much effort has been put in behind the scenes to spend extra time together feels like a pretty good sign with a training camp set to start tomorrow. A big point of emphasis throughout Media Day for Chicago was just how fresh this roster will be on opening night. With LaVine, Coby White, and Patrick Williams being the only players remaining on last season’s pre-trade-deadline roster, there will be a lot of growth and reps that need to take place over the next few weeks. The more familiar these two leaders are with each other, the better.
Not to mention, much of the speculation around this team has been in regards to the fit of DeRozan and LaVine. Two high-volume scorers who have grown accustomed to being the No. 1 play on their team, it can be nothing but positive that they started to build a bond early in the offseason.
Anyway, make sure to check out DeRozan’s full interview below.
