NBC News Correspondents Tom Winter and Jonathan Dienst dropped some surprising news on Thursday morning. According to Winter, 18 former NBA players have been arrested and charged with a federal crime for defrauding the NBA out of approximately $4.0 million. All players allegedly took advantage of the league’s Health and Welfare Benefit Plan.
The list of those charged is highlighted by names Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Jamario Moon, and Tony Allen. Several players with Chicago/Illinois connections also appear on the list, including …
Allen – Chicago native who attended Crane High School
Eddie Robinson – Former-Bull who played in Chicago for three seasons from 2001-04
Will Bynum – Another Chicago native who also attended Crane High School
Shannon Brown – Former Illinois Mr. Basketball who grew up in Maywood and attended Proviso East High School (also played six games for the Bulls in 2007-08).
Melvin Ely – Harvey, Illinois native who attended Thorton Township High School
Darius Miles – Belleville, Illinois native who attended East St. Louis
