DeMar DeRozan Confirms the Clippers Were En Route When He Signed With the Bulls

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls signing DeMar DeRozan this summer was the sweetest of sweet, but the story about exactly how it went down was the icing on the cake.

We learned back in August that Chicago Bulls GM Marc Eversley sealed the deal in a truly clutch fashion. According to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes, the Los Angeles Clippers were literally en route for a meeting at DeRozan’s house when they were told to slam the brakes.

Here’s a snippet from Haynes’ Posted Up Podcast:

So, behind the scenes, this is what happened: The plan was for them to meet. The Clippers brass was driving on their way to DeMar’s house. Things got a little more interesting with the Bulls, and DeMar DeRozan’s agent, Aaron Goodwin, called – it looked like a deal was gonna get done with Chicago – he called the Clippers out of courtesy and he was like, ‘you know what, let’s not waste any time, out of respect for you guys, let’s cancel this meeting. He’s going to go elsewhere.’”

That’s a pretty wild story, so much so that Bucks’ big man Serge Ibaka asked DeRozan to confirm it on an episode of his “How Hungry Are You?” web series. And the 5x All-Star did just that.

DeRozan: “It definitely was an opportunity that presented itself,” DeRozan told Ibaka. “I think, for me, the Chicago thing just took off by the time they were on the way to my house to where it was a situation I didn’t want to pass up.

Ibaka: “Come on, bro … This happened while they were on their way to meet you?”

DeRozan: “Yeah, it really happened that way.”

Filmed over the summer and released this Wednesday, as a former teammate of DeRozan’s in Toronto and a member of the Clippers at the time, Ibaka drilled DeRozan with more questions. He went on to ask whether or not “money talks,” and the Bulls’ leading scorer kept it real:

“Everything talks,” DeRozan said. “The whole dynamic of the team, and the opportunity. I talked to PG [Paul George]. I talked to PG about it, and we were really talking about it. We were really trying to figure out how to make it happen. But what needed to be figured out didn’t get figured out for us to make it happen.”

It’s no secret DeRozan had a legitimate interest in returning to LA. A Compton native and former USC Trojan, he reportedly spoke with members of both the Lakers and Clippers about a possible pairing. But neither could offer up the contract or opportunity that Chicago laid out in front of him.

Again, considering this video was filmed prior to the season, it’s encouraging to hear how confident DeRozan sounds about his decision. The Bulls sold him on a vision he could get behind, and I think it’s safe to say it’s one that has already started to come to fruition this season. Anyway, the complete interview with Ibaka is a great look at DeRozan’s personality, so give it a watch if you have some time!
