First, Giannis Antetokounmpo broke the hearts of Bulls fans. Now, he’s playing with them.
The 2x MVP and Milwaukee Bucks superstar had nothing but nice things to say about the team he most recently demolished in the first round of the playoffs. In fact, Antetokounmpo’s words were so kind that he told Fox 32 Chicago that he wouldn’t rule out playing for the famous franchise down the road.
“I think anybody you ask that question [to] who plays basketball, if he said no, he would be a liar. It’s a team that won multiple championships. It’s a team that one of the greatest players – if not the greatest player – played for, so it’s a no-brainer,” Antetokounmpo told the Fox Kickoff team. “Everybody would love to play for Chicago. Down the line, you never know. You never know how life brings it. Maybe I play for Chicago. But right now I’m committed to Milwaukee.”
In the wise words of Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye, aka Ronin) in Avengers Endgame: “Don’t give me hope!”
I have to admit, I’m baffled that Antetokounmpo actually uttered this response. While I understand that this is, in part, a diplomatic answer from the superstar, he also plays for the freakin’ Milwaukee Bucks! Expressing this much love toward a central division foe is a bit of a surprise, and he certainly didn’t need to imply that one day he could play for the organization. If anything, that does suggest at least an ounce of genuine interest!
Having said that, no, I’m not about to start a GoFundMe for a new billboard or circle the summer of 2026 on my calendar (when Antetokunmpo will become an unrestricted free agent). Is it always cool to hear a player of his caliber speak this fondly of Chicago? Absolutely. But just like when Anthony Davis had a similar comment in 2019, we know to take these remarks with a major grain of salt.
Still, I can’t wait to see Bucks fans freak out about this quote!
