Who Wouldn’t Want to Play in Chicago? Training Camp Reminders, No KD Movement, and Other Bulls Bullets

I can’t wait to watch a 36-year-old Giannis and 38-year-old AD anchor the Bulls’ frontcourt in 2031.

LEAGUE BETTER WATCH OUT!

  • In all seriousness, whether Antetokounmpo becomes a future Bull or not, I do believe him when says “everybody would love to play for Chicago.” Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone would go out of their way to make it happen, but rather that most would consider it if the stars aligned. I do sincerely believe the organization’s rich history, strong fan base, and excellent market make it an appealing destination for big-name talent across the league. But having respected leadership and a winning foundation is also a must.
  • I don’t think it’s a coincidence that almost immediately after the Bulls changed their front office they had arguably their best free agency in franchise history. Sure, we have Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley’s spending to thank for that, but guys like DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso had to want to come to Chicago. I strongly believe that would not have been the case with the pre-existing management group in town. So combine a new and well-respected front office with the first winning season in nearly half a decade, and I have to imagine Chicago is on the mind more than it has been in quite some time. As long as the franchise can continue to string together winning seasons, who is to say they aren’t a couple of years away from adding a superstar-caliber player?
  • I say all of that while well aware of one giant obstacle still in the way: Ownership. The fact of the matter is that the Reinsdorfs have yet to prove they are willing to spend what it takes to be a true contender in today’s NBA. Would I like to think they would pay top dollar if someone like Antetokounmpo expressed genuine interest in coming to Chicago? Absolutely. But I’d be lying if I said I’m not fearful of this organization’s ability to continue growing in the right direction over the next few years.
  • Training camp is set to tip off next month, and Spotrac’s Keith Smith reminded us that the Bulls have three spots open on their expanded offseason roster.
  • Last year we saw players like Tyler Cook, Alize Johnson, Matt Thomas, Ethan Thompson, Stanley Johnson, Daniel Oturu, and Simi Shittu join the team for camp and the preseason. To be clear, the Bulls had more permanent roster spots open for a full-fledged competition at the time. Cook, Johnson, and Thomas all used this opportunity to prove they were worthy of a spot on the opening night bench. However, this time around, the Bulls’ training camp invites will likely have merely one two-way contract to fight for. Rookie Justin Lewis currently occupies the other slot, but we should note that his future remains a bit cloudy with recent news of a potentially severe injury.
  • This also seems like a good time to remind you that these training camp invites can still be valuable regardless of whether a player makes the official team. Not only does it offer a closer look at a potentially intriguing talent, but certain training camp contracts give the Bulls first dibs at signing a free agent to their G-League squad. While we have yet to see this organization strongly use its G-League talent, it’s still a close-to-home talent pool worth monitoring.
  • ICYMI: Dalen Terry left an impression on The CrawsOver Pro-Am this weekend with an absurd 56 points. Yes, you read that right.
  • As we previously surmised, EuroLeague MVP Vasilije Micic was searching for too much dough in the NBA. For a Bulls team that was already stuffed at the guard position, it wouldn’t make sense to pay top dollar for the veteran, especially when he has yet to appear in a single NBA game over his career.
  • I would have crapped my pants if I had to tell MJ to get me a beer.
  • According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Kevin Durant trade rumors remain as quiet as ever. The Brooklyn Nets continue to hold their ground, and Windhorst suggests this could stretch all the way into next month. Woohoo.
  • Good for Monty!
  • I … um … what?
