When the Oklahoma City Thunder tip-off their season on October 19th, they’ll be without arguably their most important player.
Chet Holmgren – who the Thunder selected No. 2-overall in the 2022 NBA Draft – has been ruled out for the entire 2022-23 season with a foot injury, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Word first dropped on Wednesday afternoon that Holmgren had potentially suffered ligament damage in his foot. The team was waiting on further evaluations to announce a potential timetable for return, and I think it’s safe to say they didn’t get the information they were hoping for.
Holmgren suffered the injury at The CrawsOver Pro-AM when suiting up alongside the likes of LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, and No. 1-overall pick Paolo Banchero. After trying to defend James on a driving layup in transition, Holmgren could be seen briefly hobbling up the floor before exiting the game. The same Pro-AM contest was eventually stopped shot after players were experiencing problems with condensation on the floor. However, whether or not that slippery surface played any role in Holmgren’s injury is unclear.
Considering some already questioned how Holmgren’s slim physique would hold up at the NBA level, this may not be the most comforting start to his career. But there is also a reason the seven-footer came off the board second on June 23rd. An elite shot-blocker who can handle the ball and stretch the floor, Holmgren has long been a highly-touted two-way prospect who fits the NBA’s current mold.
Unfortunately, we will not get to see his skills put to the test right away, but I still look forward to watching him for years to come. Get well soon, Chet!
