It’s an exciting month for hoop fans everywhere!
Not only does September mark the start of NBA training camp around the league, but the 2022 EuroBasket tournament officially tipped off this afternoon.
The tournament will stretch over the next 18 days throughout Europe and include 24 total teams. The first nine days of the competition will feature group stage play, where four groups of six will play in a round-robin fashion. Then, starting on September 10th, the top four teams in each group will advance to a single-elimination stage. The 16 teams will fight it out to be the last remaining squad on September 18th in Berlin, Germany.
While the famous tournament has long included NBA talent, this year features an impressive amount of big-name stars. Giannis Antetokounmpo will suit up for Greece, Nikola Jokic will play for Serbia, Rudy Gobert is with Team France, and Domantas Sabonis will compete for Lithuania.
The reigning champions – Slovenia – will also run out quite the impressive unit that features superstar Luka Doncic and recently-signed Chicago Bulls Goran Dragic (who already had a pretty crazy shot in a preliminary contest last month). Those two will help tip-off the tournament today with a battle against Sabonis’ Lithuania. The other games this afternoon include France-Germany and Turkey-Montenegro (where you can also watch Bulls’ big man Marko Simonovic).
