The Golden State Warriors are headed into a new era.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, long-time President and General Manager Bob Myers has chosen to step down from his position with the Warriors. Speculation loomed for months over whether Myers would continue to run the franchise. He was up for a fresh contract this summer but has reportedly turned down the Warriors’ offers to stick around.
of course, Myers has grown to become one of the most well-respected minds in the game during his 12 years with Golden State. It was largely his innovative eye for talent that helped construct the Warriors’ dynasty that has gone on to win four championships since 2014-15.
Myers’ decision to step away comes at a pivotal time for the Warriors. Not only has the new CBA established harsher penalties for teams that spend as much as they do, but the team’s long-time core isn’t getting any younger.
The Warriors also just went through a drama-filled season that started with a shocking practice incident between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole. They finished just 6th in the Western Conference after their championship campaign and held a road record of 11-30. Ultimately, their chance to defend their title came to a crashing halt in six games to LeBron James’ and the Lakers.
What the future holds for Golden State is rather unclear. While they’re likely to remain competitive as long as Stephen Curry is in town, they’ll now need to find someone who can craft his supporting cast as well as Myers did. Wojnarowski reports that former Bull turned front office executive Mike Dunleavy Jr. could be next in line to run the team.
Anyway, if Myers is looking for a new challenge, may I recommend returning one of the NBA’s prime franchises to glory? Chicago is a wonderful city!
