Team USA wants revenge. After finishing in fourth place during the 2023 FIBA World Cup, reports have now surfaced that LeBron James is actively recruiting a superteam for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Athletics’ Shams Charania wrote that James is practically ready to commit to next year’s Olympics, and he has spoken to future HOFers like Kevin Durant to Stephen Curry about doing the same. Names like Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Damian Lillard, and Draymond Green are also expressing interest, per Charania’s report.
For the aging James, he seemingly views this as his last opportunity to make a major statement on the international stage:
“James, who has not played for Team USA since the 2012 Games in London and will turn 39 in December, and Durant, a three-time Olympian and gold medalist who will be 35 by next summer, are viewing the Paris games as a “last dance” with USA Basketball, sources said.”
While Team USA has struggled in recent World Cups, the program has remained strong at the Olympics. They have picked up four straight gold medals, and there is no question this news puts them in a prime position to make it five. If James can pull this roster off, it should be one of the most star-studded Team USA squads we’ve seen in quite some time.
The problem, of course, is the NBA playoffs. If any of these big names go on a run, committing to some grueling overseas play may not be so easy. It’s easy to talk about it now, but a lot can change as the regular season gets underway.
For more information, you can check out Charania’s post here. I’m sure hoping at least ONE Chicago Bull can find his way onto the roster. Zach LaVine was a pretty big part of the team’s last gold medal run, so might they call him again?
