Chicago Sky Reportedly Hiring Hall of Famer Teresa Weatherspoon as Head Coach

Teresa Weatherspoon is reportedly nearing a deal with the Chicago Sky to become their next head coach, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

One of the most renowned players in WNBA history, Weatherspoon was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and five-time All-Star. She went on to serve as the head coach of Louisiana Tech and later joined the New Orleans Pelicans organization, where she has spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach.

A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Weatherspoon will fill the enormous hole left by James Wade. The former head coach and front office leader departed the franchise for a gig on the Toronto Raptors coaching staff midway through this past season. He spent five seasons with the team and helped lead them to their first WNBA Championship in franchise history during the 2021 season.

Weatherspoon will take over a team ready to stay in the competitive mix. Three-time All-Star Kahleah Copper recently signed a two-year extension, while the Sky also acquired young sharpshooter Marina Mabrey last offseason. The team creeped into the first round of the playoffs this year but watched their season end to the first-place Aces.
