The Last Dance Frustration, More Injury Trouble, Poor Roster Building, and Other Bulls Bullets

Only the Chicago Bulls could see the greatest dynasty in basketball history turn into a petty party.

In case you missed it, Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, and Luc Longley will embark on the “No Bull Tour” this week in Australia. And, yes, this whole thing sounds like it’s about the continued frustration over The Last Dance. Horace Grant even called it a “bulls*** documentary” during a recent talk with the NBL, implying that this upcoming tour will set the record straight.

Look, I’d love to hear from these three players. Everybody experiences things differently, and I’m sure that each long-standing member of that 90s run has some fascinating stories to tell. But I’m way less interested in hearing those stories when they’re told through a lens of pettiness. I want the real stories and not the exaggerated version that pretends Michael Jordan didn’t exist.

  • To add to the ’90s drama, Michael Jordan will reportedly return to the United Center this Sunday … for a Blackhawks game. The Chicago Bulls legend couldn’t make the organization’s “Ring of Honor Ceremony,” but he will find a way to attend Chris Chelios’ jersey retirement ceremony. More from that on Tab here.
  • Is it totally possible Jordan had prior engagements that kept him from coming to this year’s inaugural event? Sure. He’s a busy guy. But he’s also freakin’ Michael Jordan, which means he probably has the power to move around his schedule pretty easily. If he really wanted to be in attendance for the Bulls’ ceremony, I have to imagine he would’ve found a way. And that stings. If this organization is going to try to blind us from the present with the past, at least do it right!
  • The All-Star break felt like a breath of fresh air, especially for Coby White and DeMar DeRozan. Both players headed into the break leading the NBA in total minutes played. White has appeared in all 55 games thus far, while DeRozan has missed only two contests. With Patrick Williams rejoining the lineup and Torrey Craig already back on the floor, it felt like those two could finally see an easier workload over the final 27 games. Nope! The Chicago Bulls shared on Tuesday evening that Williams remains sidelined with his foot injury, and Craig will miss 2-4 weeks with a knee injury he suffered over the All-Star break.
  • Without two of their best defensive options at the wing, the Bulls will now have to rely that much more on their offense to keep them in the game. Despite the strong individual play from White and DeRozan, we know this hasn’t been their strength all season long, and we talked more about that here.
  • Once again, this injury trouble is showing us how poorly this roster was constructed. We knew heading into this season that size and length at the power forward position remained arguably the team’s greatest weakness. As much as I like Torrey Craig as a player, signing him to a veteran minimum was never going to be enough to fix the Bulls’ problems. Not to mention, the team used more money on Jevon Carter, who has struggled to remain a part of the rotation and stands just six-foot-one.

  • We’ve also seen head coach Billy Donovan appear hesitant to consistently lean on young guys like Dalen Terry and Julian Phillips. With the goal from the front office to compete for a postseason berth, the head coach clearly doesn’t want to ask too much of them. And I can understand. This wouldn’t be a problem, however, if the Bulls recognized where their team was at and opted to prioritize player development over winning. Especially with the success we’ve seen from players like Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu this season, the front office should have felt only more inclined to take a step back at the trade deadline. Alas … here we are.
  • Oh, and what about Terry Taylor? He was signed to a full-time roster spot, but we have only seen him in 18 games despite the prolonged injury trouble this season. Is he another guy that Donovan doesn’t trust? We’ve seen this with Marko Simonovic, Carlik Jones, and Tony Bradley, this front office has loved signing guys their head coach is afraid to use.
  • DeMar DeRozan was at his alma mater – USC – on Tuesday night to debut his new Dinners With DeMar series.
  • Patrick Williams ranking among the league’s worst at the rim sure isn’t my favorite!
  • Coby White spoke more about seeing Caitlin Clark in person. The Bulls’ guard attended her record-breaking game in Iowa last week. More on that here.
  • Pretty cool story …
