The Celtics Just Got a Concerning Injury Update on Kristaps Porzingis

Just two games after returning from a calf injury suffered in the first round, Kristaps Porzingis is in danger of missing time due to an injury suffered in Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

In Boston’s 105-98 win over the Mavericks, Porzingis suffered a torn medial retinaculum, allowing dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon, per the Celtics. Now, unless you’re a doctor or have suffered this injury before you’ve probably never heard of it. I haven’t either. But, essentially, it’s an injury to his left leg, and it’s one that’s considered fairly rare.

Kristaps Porzingis Game 3 Status Up In The Air

If you listen to Porzingis talk, it sounds more likely than not that he’ll give it a go in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. How much he can give and how well he’ll be able to move is the ultimate question, though. Both Porzingis and Celtics head coach Joe Mazaulla emphasized that the big man will do whatever it takes to be in the lineup on Wednesday night.

For what it’s worth (not that it matters all that much), the Celtics also said Tuesday that Porzingis’ new injury is unrelated to the calf injury that caused him to miss the series against the Cavaliers and Pacers. It was Porzingis’ right calf that held him out originally.

Porzingis had a fantastic Game 1 when he made his return to the court and kickstarted the Celtics toward a runaway win. In the first quarter alone he had 11 points and two blocks and finished the game 20 points six rebounds, and three blocks.

If the big man isn’t able to suit up – or play his normal minutes – things could change fast in the NBA Finals. The series is shifting back to Dallas on Wednesday night, and Porzingis undoubtedly gave the Celtics a positional advantage. Remove his floor spacing ability and rim protection from the equation, and the Mavs may have new life.

Will Kristaps Porzingis be available in Game 3?
