Not that this should come as much of a surprise, but it looks like Steph Curry intends to finish out his career as a Golden State Warrior. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the four-time NBA Champion has agreed to a one-year, $62.2 million contract extension that will keep him in a Warriors uniform through the 2026-27 season.
Curry will be 38 years old in the final season under contract with Golden State, which means he won’t be a UFA until age 39 at the earliest. Essentially, it’s pretty likely that Curry plans to finish his career in the same place he started it.
Steph Curry Signs Extension With Warriors
The Warriors appear dead set on trying to get one more ring during what’s left of Curry’s superstar years. And make no mistake about it, despite being 36 years old, he hasn’t shown much sign of slowing down.
This offseason, Golden State allowed Klay Thompson to walk and attempted to tinker the roster around Curry. They also made a big push to add Lauri Markkanen from Utah in an attempt to add another star but ultimately fell short when Markkanen re-upped with the Jazz. They also reportedly made a push to bring in free agent forward Paul George, but he opted to sign with the Sixers.
Last season, the Dubs finished with the 10th seed and lost the opening-round Play-In game against the Sacramento Kings.
Though they might not be quite ready to go and grab the one seed in the West this season, GM Mike Dunleavy has done a nice job of making the team younger without having to sacrifice too much of Steph’s competitive window. The young core around Curry now consists of Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Moses Moody. Draymond Green is still there, as is Andrew Wiggins and the group of role players is solid as well.
It feels like if Dunleavy can make a deal at some point to add another true star to play alongside Steph, the Warriors could find themselves in the thick of things in the Western Conference.
If I had to guess, I would think this isn’t the last contract Steph will sign with the Warriors. I could be wrong, but I think once this extension runs out, he’ll sign one last team-friendly one-year deal to come back to the Dubs, play his final NBA season, and then close things out with an Olympic run in 2028 in the USA. Given how well this year’s run went for Curry and Team USA, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he wanted to stick around long enough to play one more Olympics in the United States.
The Warriors will tip off Steph Curry’s 16th NBA season on Wednesday, October 23rd in Portland against the Trail Blazers.
