You didn’t possibly think we’d get through Chicago Bulls Media Day without some injury news, did you!?
As has become a painful trend for this organization, their newest young guard is working his way back from an injury. Josh Giddey shared with reporters on Monday that he has been sidelined for the past two months. The 22-year-old guard suffered an ankle injury on the very last play of Australia’s loss to Serbia in the Olympics.
“I ruptured my ATFL,” Josh Giddey told the media. “We thought it was just a regular ankle [sprain] at the time, but flew back to Melbourne, got scans, and they kind of confirmed that. It’s getting better, it’s getting to the point where I’m almost back out there. But we’re taking it slow. This is not something you want to rush because we got time on our side at this point in the offseason. We’re just making sure it’s 100 percent before we get back to playing. Everything has been great. Rehab has been going well, and I’m looking forward to getting out there with the guys.
Due to Giddey’s rehab, the jumbo guard hasn’t been able to join his new teammates on the floor during their voluntary group workouts. Players met both in Florida and early in Chicago this summer to begin preparation for the season. Considering the ball-handling responsibilities Giddey projects to handle moving forward, this sure could mean an even greater adjustment period over the next handful of weeks.
The good news is that Giddey went on to reiterate that this injury isn’t something that should hold him out for much longer. While it seems unlikely he’ll be a full participant on Day 1 of training camp (aka Oct. 1), he did not hesitate when asked if he’d be good to go by opening night.
“Everything is getting much better. It’s probably at a point where if it was a playoff game, I’d be out there playing. But because we’re in the offseason, this isn’t something you want to rush. We just want to get it 100 percent right,” Josh Giddey said. “Opening day? Yeah, yeah. I’ll be fine by then.”
Nevertheless, let’s keep our fingers crossed that Giddey faces no setbacks and can get on the training camp court ASAP. The entire offseason is supposed to run through the hands of the Bulls’ newest addition, so the quicker Billy Donovan has him 100 percent, the better.
