As if Joakim Noah’s heartwarming tribute to Derrick Rose wasn’t enough to melt our hearts, Taj Gibson has now shared his reaction.
The long-time Chicago Bulls forward is 39 years old and headed toward Year 16 of his NBA career. Signed with the Charlotte Hornets as a veteran leader, he took the podium at the team’s Media Day this week and waxed poetic about his now-retired former teammate.
โHeartbroken, still heartbroken. I havenโt really talked to many people. I havenโt even gotten a chance to post yet. The last few days have been a blur. Just staring at the wall, honestly โฆ Just trying to gather everything up because I know him from a mental standpoint, heโs one of the toughest guys in the league.
So for him to really call it quits โฆ I cried a lot,” Gibson admitted (h/t Jerry Donatien). “I had a lot of shed tears because in this league, to get to this point, you have to put so much sacrifice. I just go back to all the years and all the games and remembering us being young. Going back to each otherโs house and still thinking about life and put it together. Where he is at now, how graceful he is able to step away, yeah man it hurts. It still does.โ
While Gibson and Rose spent the majority of their time together competing near the top of the East in Chicago, they went on to cross paths several more times. The two played the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons with one another in Minnesota before teaming up again in 2020-21 on the New York Knicks for a couple of seasons. Considering all this time in the locker room over the years, it’s no surprise that Rose’s announcement pulled at Gibson’s heartstrings.
The good news for Gibson is that he should be able to celebrate Rose’s career alongside the rest of Chicago later this season. The Hornets do not have a game scheduled on January 4, 2025, which is currently the rumored date for a Derrick Rose retirement party at the United Center.
