Jeff Stevens is Marginal

Chicago Cubs

Following the Mark DeRosa trade, I’ve been scouring the ‘net for info on the three pitching prospects the Cubs got in return. Hopefully I’ll have something a little more thorough and polished soon, but I came across an interesting little tidbit about the one that appears to be the best of the three, Jeff Stevens. Stevens split time between AA and AAA last year, and pitched excellently – but he’s already 25. He was supposed to be the closer for the U.S. Olympic team.

The tidbit I found comes from the Indians’ SB Nation site, Let’s Go Tribe. In a June article about the team’s various trade pieces, they broke down their prospects into two main groups: “Guys with Value” and “Guys with Marginal Value.” Jeff Stevens, unfortunately, fell into the latter category – along with 15 other guys, so it wasn’t exactly an exclusive group. Maybe I give Let’s Go Tribe too much credit in evaluating Stevens, but I figure they’ve got to know more about him than any of the general minor league sites.
