Lukewarm Stove: Adam Wainwright to the Yankees for Robinson Cano?

Chicago Cubs

Gotta keep tabs on division rivals, and in an offseason where none of the Central teams have made particularly compelling moves, any whiff of a rumor is interesting.

The St. Louis Cardinals have been especially quiet – both on the transaction front, and the rumor front. Lately, they’ve seemed focused on wrapping up their arbitration-eligible players.

There has been a little speculation about the Cardinals going after another starting pitcher – big names like Jon Garland and Oliver Perez have been mentioned, but I have my doubts about the legitimacy of such rumors.

So when a rumor popped up that the Cardinals were considering dealing away one of their starters, our ears perked up. Apparently the Cards hit up the Yankees to inquire about second baseman Robinson Cano, to replace freshly-departed Aaron Miles.

I guess the talks didn’t get very far, again, because of that whole lack of pitchers thing.

The asking price the New York Yankees set for second baseman Robinson Cano when the Cardinals called about a deal: Adam Wainwright. The conversation did not last long.

As things stand, the Cardinals look set to trot out a comination of ever-declining Adam Kennedy and Brendan Ryan at second base.
