Even after the acquisition of could-be-starter Aaron Heilman, the Chicago Cubs are reportedly still considering free agents Randy Wolf and Braden Looper.
Obviously they would be in lieu of Jake Peavy.
Looper and Wolf are expected to command a contract similar to Jon Garland – who yesterday got a one-year (with an option for 2010) deal from the Diamondbacks in the range of $6-8 mill.
That’s certainly a lot less than they were looking to command earlier in the offseason, but it’s hard to view either as a necessary addition to a team that has two very good 5th starter options already – Sean Marshall and Heilman – and several other in-house possibilities like Jeff Samardzija.
