The Fifth Cut is the Most Relevant

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs cut six guys from the Spring roster, and the team is now down to 37. This cut was the most relevant so far, because there were definitely guys who had a chance to make the team included – well, that is to say they had a chance when camp opened.

Jake Fox absolutely dominated with his bat, but the lack of a defensive position or solid enough play at a variety of positions doomed his bid. He has a major league bat, so he’ll get a cup of coffee at some point, even if it isn’t with the Cubs.

Jose Ascanio was also cut. He’s going to be a major league reliever some day, but there just wasn’t a spot for him right now. He’s second or third in line if a spot should open up in the Cubs pen due to injury.

The Cubs also cut Sam Fuld, Jason Waddell, Richie Robnett, and Bobby Scales. Robnett was also de-rostered (taken off the 40-man) and outrighted to AAA Iowa. That leaves the Cubs’ 40-man at just 38 players. Makes one wonder if a trade is in the works, or – more likely – the team anticipates rostering one or two of the current non-roster invitees still in camp.
