Apparently there’s a theme today. Get on board.
Left-hander Neal Cotts has just about worn out his welcome with manager Lou Piniella as the only left-hander in the Cubs’ bullpen. Jason Waddell, who signed as a free agent in November, could be called up to replace Cotts. Through Monday’s games, Waddell’s owns a 0-1 record and 5.40 ERA. In 16 2/3 innings pitched, he has 12 strikeouts, seven walks and has allowed 17 hits. ESPN Chicago.
Although I could buy Cotts on the way out, I have a hard time believing he’ll be replaced by Waddell. Waddell clearly outpitched Cotts in Spring Training, yet he still came up short. And it’s not as though he’s done much of anything at AAA thus far, despite his very advanced age.
It’s more likely that the Lou Piniella would like to see Sean Marshall moved to the pen when Rich Harden comes back, which would allow them to send Cotts out while keeping a lefty in the pen. Whether Marshall’s excellent performance against the Pirates last night changes that, only time will tell.
