Am I the only one who was starting to feel like the Aramis Ramirez rehab was turning into a black box? The Chicago Cubs’ best hitter and third baseman went down on May 8 with a dislocated shoulder, and we haven’t really heard boo since.
Well, it seems the rehab is going just so-so.
Aramis Ramirez is aiming to rejoin the Cubs once play resumes after the All-Star break on July 16 — if everything in his rehab work goes according to plan — but offseason surgery remains a possibility for the All-Star third baseman who dislocated his left shoulder diving for a ball May 8. CHICAGO SUN-TIMES.
That would put his absence at about 12 weeks, which was actually on the longer side of projections when he first went down. It kind of sucks that 12 weeks is now the optimistic goal.
”I’m working to get the strength back and, hopefully, I won’t need surgery,” Ramirez told the Sun-Times on Sunday. ”If at the end of the season, if it is still bothering me, then I’ll have to do something. But if I rehab pretty good, and everything goes well, then I don’t have to.
”If I have to have surgery, I’m going to have it right after the season. And I should be ready for the next season. I don’t know if I’ll be ready for spring training, but I should be ready for Opening Day.”
There had been whispers over the weekend that Ramirez could be done for the season, but he shot down that speculation.
”No, I’ll be back on the field; I just don’t know when,” said Ramirez, who was hitting .364 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 18 games when he went down. ”If everything goes like we plan, I should be OK for the first or second week of July.”
The Cubs are 9-12 since Ramirez went down, so the sooner he can make it back, obviously, the better.
