Obsessive Peavywatch: Stop Obsessing

Chicago Cubs

It’s over.

It hasn’t been a legitimate or necessary or even wise dream for quite some time, but a dream still it was. This weekend, San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy stopped being able to play through the pain of an ankle injury, and it turns out he’s going to be out much longer than the month originally projected.

Padres’ head trainer Todd Hutcheson [] said Jake Peavy could be out 8-12 weeks “if things don’t come along as fast as we’d like them to.” That means Peavy could be out until after the trade deadline, a major blow to a Padres team looking to retool and shed payroll. MLBTradeRumors.com.

That would put Peavy’s return realistically past the trade deadline, and would push any deal to the offseason. Even if Peavy comes back on the most optimistic of timelines – one month – he’ll have very little time to prove that he is healthy and effective.

And when there’s over $50 million on the line in this economy, no team is going to take that chance lightly.
