Two recent rumor-ettes are percolating involving the Chicago Cubs and a couple ok-but-not-great players that are on the block.
First up, the Pittsburgh Pirates are planning to trade Freddy Sanchez if possible.
The Pirates are “pushing hard” to trade All-Star second baseman Freddy Sanchez, according to a National League executive this morning.
The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies are two of the teams with which the Pirates have spoken, the source said, but there are as many as four or five more. post-gazette.com.
You’ve got to believe that the Cubs have at least inquired, given how poorly Mike Fontenot has adjusted to the full-time role at 2nd. Sanchez’s performance has trailed off quite a bit in June and July, and he’s owed some $8 million next year.
The Cubs are also kicking the tires on a Jim Hendry favorite, the versatile Mark Teahen. The timing of the, well, kicking, is unknown though. It’s possible this was back when Aramis Ramirez was still out.
