Josh Vitters and Starlin Castro are Future Something or Others

Daytona Cubs (High A) and top Chicago Cubs prospects Josh Vitters and Starlin Castro participated in yesterday’s rain-shortened Minor League Futures game. It’s basically an All-Star game for all of the Minor Leagues, where the U.S. takes on the World. It’s like if Minor League baseball was a metaphor for international relations under the Bush administration. High-o!

Neither Vitters nor Castro got to play much in the game – Vitters went 0-1 with a walk, and Castro went 1-1, though he did score an important run – but the fact that they were selected to play is quite impressive.

Vitters was the Cubs’ first round pick (number 3 overall) in the 2007 draft. Castro, an undrafted free agent signed by the Cubs in 2006 (which is sort of an unfair lable, as he was just 17 at the time), is the shortstop for the Daytona Cubs, and although he isn’t lighting the world on fire with his bat, he plays solid defense and hits well enough to keep the job against players two and three years his senior.
