As we anticipated, Tom Gorzelanny was acquired as a stop-gap for the Chicago Cubs’ rotation as it misses Ted Lilly. He’ll start three times in Lilly’s absence.
Newly acquired Cubs left-hander Tom Gorzelanny made his introductions to the team Saturday, and he’ll get three starts, beginning Tuesday in Cincinnati, to make an impression to possibly earn more.
After that, All-Star Ted Lilly is due to return from the disabled list, and unless Carlos Zambrano’s stiff lower back is a lingering problem, that would seem to leave no room for Gorzelanny in the rotation.
”We’ll see,” manager Lou Piniella said. ”Right now we’ve got him scheduled for three starts, and we’ll go from there.” CHICAGO SUN-TIMES.
Gorzelanny, 27, has been a dominant starter this year… in AAA.
He was, all things considered, a great starter for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006 and 2007, before losing it in 2008, and being moved to the bullpen – and subsequently the minors – last year. Scouts told Jim Hendry prior to the trade that Gorzelanny had “it” back.
And let’s hope so. If he craps out in his three starts, there is not a reliable option ready to go. Sean Marshall would be next in line, but he is not sufficiently stretched out – nor would there be time to stretch him out – to start.
As an aside… God, what an unfortunate mug.
