God’s Wrath Watch: Reed Johnson’s Season May Be Over

The news about Reed Johnson’s recovery from a broken foot has been a real bummer. Not so much because the Chicago Cubs would have been dramatically more successful with Johnson in the lineup, but moreso because he seems like a great guy who really loves the Cubs.

So, the bummer: Johnson’s recovery has not gone anything like expected, and he is now very much at risk for missing the rest of the season.

Johnson has been on the disabled list since July 30, after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot on July 29 against Houston.

“Talked to Reed last night, and he still can’t run,” manager Lou Piniella said. “This season is slip-sliding away for us. There’s no place to send him for rehab, and he still can’t put weight on it and run.” Hardball.

Reed Johnson was always a player whose legend usually outshone his actual performance. A solid contributor, but never a star, Johnson is probably best loved by Cubs fans for his energy and effort in the outfield, which led to several spectacular catches.

Johnson will be a free agent at the end of this season, so if he isn’t able to come back and play in the final month, he may have played his last game as a Chicago Cub.
