Hey, remember all that Spring Training location stuff? Florida, Arizona, Florida, Arizona? Well, short story is, the Cubs decided to keep Springing in Mesa, Arizona, pending the city being able to find financing short of having to impose a surtax on the other Cactus League teams.
Well, that financing is still being worked out.
Attorneys for the Cubs the City of Mesa are holding meetings in an effort to reach a formal agreement to keep the team in Arizona.
Mayor Scott Smith said both sides will attempt to hammer out details before a July 12 deadline.
Mesa won’t meet a key technical requirement regarding financing by the July deadline, but Smith said work is forging ahead with an alternative approach. The Legislature failed during its last session to come up with a funding formula to build a new stadium for the Cubs.
The city has since decided to sell off land in Pinal County to fund the $84 million project. Chicago Breaking Sports.
It doesn’t sound like anyone – save maybe the Florida folks – is terribly concerned that things with Mesa will fall through.
