No Additional Instant Replay – Yet

Chicago Cubs

Those hoping for increased use of instant replay will have to wait until at least the 2011 season (probably longer – like, when Bud Selig finally retires), as today the commissioner announced that there will not be any increased use of instant replay this postseason.

Selig said Monday night that he had discussed the matter with the special committee of managers, management and ownership he appointed in December.

MLB instituted video review to assist umpires late in the 2008 season, but limited its use to whether potential home runs are fair and whether the ball went over the fence. Chicago Breaking Sports.

Football has proved that increased instant replay use can be both effective and not overly time-consuming. Like it or lump it, baseball will move in this direction, even against the opposition of old-timers and umpires.
