Looks like my tea leaf reading was correct. Despite announcing a desire to have their managerial decision made sooner rather than later, the Chicago Cubs are expected to wait out the Yankees’ season so that they can “at least try” to bring in skipper Joe Girardi for an interview, according to Buster Olney.
The Cubs are intent on taking a run at Girardi, Olney confirms, in part because they’d legitimately like to discuss the job with him to see how he’d fit; and in part because they know the fans really want to see the Cubs take a run at him.
Although the Cubs are interviewing guys like Eric Wedge, Bob Melvin and Don Wakamatsu, the three clear front-runners are Mike Quade, Ryne Sandberg and Joe Girardi. The former two would be less expensive than the latter, and are decidedly more realistic than the latter. But, hey, at least the Cubs are trying to look at Girardi, right?
