Shortly after taking himself out of consideration for the Chicago Cubs’ managerial opening (because, paraphrasing his words, the Cubs are certain to suck for the foreseeable future), rumors are popping up that Cubs color broadcaster Bob Brenly is going to land the Milwaukee Brewers’ recently-vacated job. But those rumors were quickly shot down by Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin.
GM Doug Melvin just denied on the ESPN radio show “The D-List” that he is about to hire Chicago Cubs television broadcaster Bob Brenly as his next manager. Melvin said he hadn’t even begun the process yet.
I am in-studio with “The D-List” and talking with Melvin, who was a bit incredulous over his rumor. And I don’t blame him. IÂ never believed it to begin with because it’s just too early for anything like this right now.
Brenly has managed in the majors, leading Arizona to the World Series title over the Yankees in 2001.
Brenly was one of four candidates for the job after the 2008 season and the only one not hired. Ken Macha got the job, Dale Sveum, who had been interim manager, became hitting coach and Willie Randolph was named bench coach. JSOnline.
I can’t do much but hope that, if Brenly wants to manage again, he’s given a chance to do so. He’s been a great color man for the Cubs, and he’d be missed in that capacity. But I can’t begrudge him wanting to get back into the action.
For what it’s worth, rumor has it that MLB Network analyst and announcer – and former Cub – Dan Plesac would be the top man to replace Brenly should he depart.
