According to multiple reports, former Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge – one of three candidates, together with Ryne Sandberg and Mike Quade, to go through a full battery of interviews with both Jim Hendry and Tom Ricketts – will soon be announced as the next manager of the Seattle Mariners.
It isn’t terribly surprising that he didn’t end up with the Cubs, given that he was screened so heavily, interviewed so thoroughly, and yet the Cubs continued to wait. He obviously wasn’t the guy they really wanted.
Bob Melvin remains on the Cubs’ possible list, though he has not yet interviewed with Ricketts. Sandberg and Quade are still the heavy favorites, with Joe Girardi an outside possibility.
